Calling all Jewish Quarterly readers to come to our own exclusive screening of the first episode of brand new series Hostages at the upcoming UK Jewish Film Festival, accompanied by BBC Four Director Cassian Harrison.
BBC Four will break new ground when in 2015 it airs the Israeli television thriller Hostages in Hebrew, with English subtitles. The show, about “a renowned surgeon about to perform a routine operation” on the Israeli president, takes a chilling turn when, only hours before Dr. Yael Danon (Ayelet Zurer) is due to scrub in, armed thugs take her family hostage at her Jerusalem home, demanding that she “sabotage the operation and kill the president—or her family will die”, reads a press release from the BBC. “Her battle to save both her family and the president takes us on a journey where everyone is fighting for survival”.
The show, broadcast first on Israel’s Channel 10 under the name Bnei Aruba, has proven a critical success and spawned an American reproduction, much the same as Hatufim did for Homeland. Watch the riveting trailer for this hotly anticipated series below.
